What is attorney coaching, and how can it help me?2026-06-04T16:07:49+00:00

Attorney coaching helps lawyers clarify goals, overcome obstacles, and take practical steps toward greater professional success and career satisfaction. Clients come to coaching for many reasons: growing a practice, navigating a career transition, preparing for leadership, becoming more effective managers, improving communication, or simply getting unstuck.

Sometimes the value is coming up with a career or marketing strategy. Sometimes it is accountability. Often, it is having a trusted sounding board who understands lawyers, legal workplaces, and the unique challenges of building a successful legal career.

Who do you work with?2026-06-04T16:09:42+00:00

I work with ambitious lawyers who are serious about making meaningful change. My clients include law firm associates, partners, counsel, in-house lawyers, and lawyers exploring alternatives to traditional legal practice.

Some clients are trying to grow their practices or become stronger leaders. Others are contemplating a career move, feeling stuck, or trying to regain a sense of direction and satisfaction.

The clients who get the most out of coaching tend to have a growth mindset. They are open to feedback, willing to try new approaches, and prepared to do the work between sessions.

How does your coaching process work?2026-06-04T16:10:06+00:00

Every coaching engagement is customized, but most clients meet with me twice a month over a period of four to six months.

Early in the process, we focus on clarifying your goals, identifying obstacles, and developing a strategy. Between sessions, you may have exercises, reflection work, or action steps designed to help you build awareness, test new approaches, and maintain momentum.

As our work shifts from strategy to implementation, some clients choose shorter, more frequent sessions. Between scheduled sessions, I also remain available throughout our engagement by email and phone for time-sensitive issues. This gives you the opportunity to work through challenging moments in real time.

Coaching is a partnership. I ask questions, offer perspective, share relevant experience when useful, and help you stay accountable and motivated. You make the decisions and do the work.

How is coaching different from therapy, consulting, mentoring, or training?2026-06-04T16:11:34+00:00

Coaching is future-focused and action-oriented. The goal is to help you gain clarity, develop insight, change behavior, and move toward meaningful professional goals.

Therapy generally focuses more on emotional healing, mental health, and past experiences. Training is typically structured instruction around a defined skill.

Consulting often involves diagnosing a problem and prescribing solutions. Mentoring usually reflects a more informal relationship where a senior professional shares guidance based on their own experience.

Coaching is different because it is collaborative. While I bring decades of experience helping lawyers with career strategy, business development, leadership, and the legal marketplace, coaching is not about me telling you what to do. It is about helping you think more clearly, make better decisions, and take effective action. I become your thought partner.
That said, I am practical by nature, and when clients need perspective grounded in experience, I provide it.

How do I know if coaching is right for me?2026-06-04T16:11:52+00:00

Coaching is a strong fit for lawyers who are motivated to make changes but need perspective, structure, accountability, or a confidential sounding board.

You do not need to have everything figured out before starting. Many clients begin because they feel uncertain, frustrated, overwhelmed, or stuck.

If you are curious, coachable, and willing to take action, coaching can be highly valuable.

How do you charge for your services?2026-06-04T16:12:21+00:00

Coaching is billed on a flat-fee basis, with 50% due at the start of the engagement and the balance due after two months.

I prefer fixed-fee arrangements because they create the right incentives for both of us. My clients should feel comfortable reaching out between scheduled sessions when important issues arise, without worrying about whether every conversation will generate an additional charge.

Coaching is not just about what happens during scheduled meetings. Some of the most valuable moments occur in real time, when you are facing a challenging conversation, an important decision, or an unexpected opportunity and need perspective, support, or accountability. A flat-fee structure makes it easier for me to be available as a true partner in your process.

If you are interested in learning more, I will discuss fees at our free consultation.

Who is not a good candidate for coaching?2026-06-04T16:12:39+00:00

Coaching is unlikely to be helpful if you are not open to feedback, unwilling to change behavior, or unwilling to invest time between sessions.

The lawyers who benefit most are those who recognize that achieving better outcomes may require different habits, different thinking, or different actions.

A fixed mindset and passive participation rarely produce meaningful results.

Why work with Steve instead of another coach?2026-06-04T16:13:02+00:00

Many coaches work with professionals. Fewer understand the legal profession from the inside, and few appreciate how lawyers are different. We are natural skeptics, we are risk averse, we tend to be analytical and linear thinkers, and we don’t like rejection. We also dislike selling.

For more than 30 years, I have worked exclusively with lawyers on career strategy, business development, leadership, and professional development. I am a lawyer, a longtime legal recruiter turned full-time coach, host of the Counsel to Counsel podcast, a frequent speaker for law firms and bar associations, and the author of Think Like a Lawyer, Act Like an Entrepreneur which was published by the American Bar Association in 2026.

I understand the pressures lawyers face, the culture of legal organizations, the realities of selling legal services, and the internal barriers that often get in lawyers’ way.
If you want practical lawyer-to-lawyer coaching grounded in deep knowledge of the profession and the way lawyers think, that is what I offer.
