And the Winner is…

We are please to announce the first winner of The Jennys!  Zohar Nevo, a talented corporate associate at the law firm Foley Hoag, has been selected for his continued ability to employ creativity in marketing his legal services.  Zohar, who is always thinking out of the box, was actually the inspiration for The Jennys.  While practicing at Yigal Arnon & Co.,  one of the leading law firms in Israel, Zohar created the Zohar Nevo Awards which he handed out liberally to colleagues he liked.

Zohar has a regular practice of sending whimsical postcards to colleagues, business contacts, and clients whenever he is traveling around the world.  But he will also send interesting postcards he finds close to home (he sent me one he found at Brookline Booksmith).

Practicing Law with a Side Hustle (“Mindful Return”)-on the C2C Podcast

Lori Mihalich-Levin is a partner in the Health Care practice at Dentons where she spends half her time on medicare reimbursement issues.  The other half of her time is spent on the business she created, Mindful Return.  Mindful Return is a program to help parents returning from parental leave. It was born out of Lori’s experience as a lawyer and as a new mom with a demanding job.  In this episode of the Counsel to Counsel Podcast, Lori talks about how she created Mindful Return, how she balances her consulting business with the practice of law, and how having a “side hustle” makes her a better lawyer (and how being a lawyer helps her business succeed).

Be S.M.A.R.T. in the New Year

I love the New Year.  With the arrival of January, we all have the chance to reinvent ourselves, create new habits, explore new directions and in short, try new things out for size.  In 2021, this has particular resonance as many of us found 2020 to be very challenging.  While we have a ways to go before life returns to “normal”, this is a great time to create goals that are S.M.A.R.T. (specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, and time-bound).  And as a reminder, once we have set those goals, it is important to create habits that move us towards those goals. (See “Mindlessness” is the Key to Marketing Success, my prior blog post.)

So what are your goals for the coming year?  Grow you practice by 20% in 2021?  Find an in-house counsel role by the Fall?  Build competency in a new practice area? Begin scaling back your practice and thinking about The Next Stage in your career/life?

Top Counsel to Counsel Podcasts of 2020

It has been a great year for the Counsel to Counsel Podcast. As we enter 2021, I thought I would highlight some of the most popular episodes of the year.  While these are the most popular episodes of 2020, I pleased to report that C2C has a long tail.  In other words, my listeners continue to go back into the archives to find interviews that are relevant to them long after the recordings have been posted.

I’m very thankful for the great professionals (lawyers and consultants) who have given me the chance to learn from them.  Podcasting has been a great education for me.  I also appreciate the thousands of listeners who have downloaded Counsel to Counsel since I launched in early 2018.

As always, I welcome your comments and suggestions!  Stay tuned for more to come!  Here is the list (follow the links or look for the Counsel to Counsel Podcast wherever you get your podcasts):

Successes and Failures in Lateral Partner Movement [On the Counsel to Counsel Podcast]

Lateral partner movement is alive and well in the practice of law.  While partners and practice groups were changing firms with increasing frequency in the past decade, the pandemic has not really slowed down the process.

There are many reasons why law firm partners seek out greener pastures. In the latest episode of the Counsel to Counsel Podcast, my guest Susan Mendelsohn, talks about some of those reasons.  But what makes a lateral move a success?  Why do some partners make a lateral move and stay for years while others quickly discover that another lateral move may be in the offing.

Susan Mendelsohn has a lot to say on the subject.

Susan Mendelsohn has been recruiting in the legal space for over 20 years. While she is based in Chicago, she serves clients throughout the United States and not only does recruiting, but like me, Susan also spends a portion of her time on
