📘 If you’re going to read just one book on communication this year, this is it.
The Next Conversation by Jefferson Fisher is packed with simple, highly actionable tips for communicating more effectively, in both professional and personal settings.
What really stood out to me is how well this book speaks to attorneys.
We pride ourselves on sounding articulate. We’re trained to persuade, argue, and explain. But Fisher reminds us of something many of ignore: Listening.
Listening is a skill and we can all get better at it.
A few key takeaways:
*Slow down your response so you don’t let emotion hijack the conversation
*Speak clearly and directly without over explaining
*Set boundaries without escalating conflict
*Focus less on “winning” the exchange and more on where the next conversation should go
For lawyers navigating client relationships, internal dynamics, leadership roles, or difficult conversations, this book offers practical tools you can use immediately.
It’s a quick read (263 pages) and available on audio book (7 hours-6 hours at 1.2x). I’m listening to it for the second time and I bought the book!
