justice scales

Making career decisions involves tradeoffs.

If you are in a job search, rarely is the choice black and white.

You might be weighing work/life balance, compensation, autonomy, growth potential, location or subject matter. One role may offer more exposure to international clients, while another gives you a shorter commute or a better support team.

Maybe you clicked with the people at one firm/company, but another offers a chance to build a new skill set or break into a new industry.

No job checks every box. That’s why it’s essential to get clear on what matters most to you before you need to make decisions.

Once you’ve done that, you can begin to weigh your options through a more objective lens.

If you’re fortunate enough to have choices, your goal is to figure out how the tradeoffs balance out.

Sometimes your decision will become obvious. More often, it is more complicated.

But doing your due diligence—gathering intel, meeting the people you’ll be working with, talking to people who are familiar with the company or industry, asking the right questions—helps you see your decision as a balancing process, not between two extremes but across many interconnected scales—each one influencing the rest.

Even then, you often don’t have perfect information. You won’t know exactly what a job will feel like until you’re in it. But that doesn’t mean you can’t make a smart, informed choice given what you do know.

And remember: sometimes, the best move is staying put—at least for now.
