The start of a new year is a powerful time to reflect and reset. Psychologists call moments like these “temporal landmarks,” and they can play a big role in motivating change.

I’ve listened to a number of psychologist discuss this on Hidden Brain podcast and The Happiness Lab but a quick Google search (or search on Spotify or YouTube) will lead you to many resources on the topic.

In a nutshell, temporal landmarks—like a new year, a birthday, or even the start of a new month—help us mentally separate our “old selves” from the person we want to become. They create a psychological clean slate, making it easier to set and stick to new goals.

But here’s the thing: January isn’t the only temporal landmark.

I do find that a lot of new clients start working with me in the new year. But December can be a temporal landmark as well.

Why not use the remaining weeks of 2024 to reflect, plan, and start building momentum? Coming into the new year with progress already underway can make January feel less daunting and more like a continuation of the positive trajectory you’re on.

For lawyers, this might mean:

🏗️Building your law practice: Strengthening client relationships or crafting a strategic business plan.
😄Finding career satisfaction: Realigning your work with your values and long-term goals.
🗣️Becoming a better leader: Enhancing your communication skills or empowering your team more effectively.

Change doesn’t have to wait for January 1. Use this December as your own temporal landmark. Start small, gain momentum, and celebrate your progress as the new year begins.
