That’s the metaphorical career advice I recently gave a client who was feeling unhappy in his career.
Too often, we operate on autopilot, speeding down a highway toward success without stopping to think about what success really means. We get caught up in the momentum, aiming for a specific destination.
But what if that destination isn’t what you truly want?
You don’t need to know exactly where you’re going in order to think critically about your career. In fact, it can be incredibly healthy to get off the “highway” and take a slower route.
Like a winding country road, when you’re lost, you never know what new opportunities or perspectives you might stumble upon—but that’s where serendipity happens.
Life is short, and if you stay on the highway, you might miss out on the experiences or paths that could bring you more fulfillment. True success and happiness aren’t always linear, and sometimes the most rewarding career moves come from taking the time to explore.
If you’re feeling stuck in your career, talk to friends, colleagues, or mentors—or consider hiring a coach to guide you through those winding roads.
A career coach can help you get unstuck, offering the perspective you need to get back on track—this time knowing exactly where you want to end up.
Make the time to explore. If you’d like to discuss your journey, feel free to reach out.
